Finally, I have compiled the results of my NJN Poll, conducted on this web site from March to early October 1996. These results will eventaully be forwarded to NJN.

Is Doctor Who Dead? (No, we're not talking about Jon Pertwee.)

Well, by now you've probably heard the news. Doctor Who is not on Fox's fall schedule, and there's no guarantee that it will become a regular series at all. While many TV critics are calling 1996 the "year of science fiction" (and indeed many new sci fi shows will premiere in the fall), the longest-running science fiction TV program may have no future as a TV show. Apparently, ratings for the telemovie that aired in the U.S. on May 14 were not as good as Fox execs had hoped (a 5.5 rating with a 9 share), and the movie finished fourth overall out of five networks. Here are some postings from rec.arts.drwho.info related to the Fox project:

And here's some web sites devoted to the Save Doctor Who cause:

In conclusion, I would suggest that anyone writing to Fox point out that one of the main reasons for Who's poor performance was the heavy competition it faced from ABC (Roseanne, Home Improvement, Coach) and NBC (Wings, Fraiser) as well as Game 5 of the Knicks-Bulls series. I know this may seem obvious to anyone of at least average intelligence, but keep in mind that you are writing to network executives.

Alternatively, you can waste time reading my comments on the new on the Doctor Who telemovie.

NEW: Dalekmania Revisited

The Daleks, of course, were the only Doctor Who monsters to have spawned an entire industry. There were Dalek toys, Dalek comic strips; there were even plans for an American television series based on the Daleks. The Zero Room now adds to its archives the following Dalek information.

NEW: The Six Doctors Essays

Here's a series of essays I began posting starting in February 1996, in which the first six Doctors reflect on what is was like to play the Doctor and the varoius challenges they faced during their tenure.

And now, the essays:

OLD: Details on the Fox Telemovie

January 9, 1996: According to an official BBC worldwide television news release, Paul McGann, a 36-year-old British actor who recently appeared in "The Hanging Gale," has been cast as The Doctor for the new BBC/Universal/Fox telemovie. You can read all about it at Siobahn Morgan's Nitro 9 web site. Also, hear what the Cyberleader has to say about this.

You can download a picture of Paul McGann from this site as well. There are other pictures of Paul McGann at the Paul McGann photo archive.

Addition: Eric Roberts has been cast as the Master, and Daphne Ashcroft (formerly of "Falcon Crest") has been cast as the Doctor's assistant for the upcoming BBC/Universal/Fox telemovie.

Doctor Who Episode List. Though not meant to be an exhaustive guide, my Episode List covers all 26 seasons, plus the Fox telemovie.

The Doctor Who Multimedia Archive. A small sampling of files that I put together, indicative of Doctor Who material currently available on the Internet. Much of this is also available at Frontios, or other sites. Also contained here is information on missing Doctor Who episodes.

Paul Ian Harman's List of Doctor Who Links. Still haven't found what you're looking for? Why not try Paul Ian Harman's list of Doctor Who links? This list is updated every two weeks and is posted by Mr. Harman to rec.arts.drwho and rec.arts.drwho.info.

Other Doctor Who Links

Into the Vortex An excellent page, and good source for other Doctor Who links.

The Tardis What distinguishes Doctor Who from other science fiction TV programs is the level of fan involvement. This is an example of such involvement. The Tardis is a page "dedicated to thos who keep Doctor Who alive by writing his new and lost adventures through time and space."

Information on Crystal Clear Doctor Who Audios. Apparently, some fans made audio recordings of now-missing Doctor Who episodes from the 1960's, and they can be obtained for a nominal cost (the cost of shipping). This web site explains it all.

Shannon Patrick Sullivan's web site. Contains a detailed program guide for all 26 seasons, including brief plot summaries. Also an excellent source for information on the new Fox telemovie.

Nicole Yates' Doctor Who Page. A text-based Doctor Who web page with many links to other sites.

The Polly Home Page. As the number of Doctor Who web sites increases, an increasing proportion of these sites are dedicated not to the Doctor himself, but to his companions. This is one example of this phenomenom. Polly (last name unknown), played by Anneke Wills, was a companion of the First and Second Doctors and remains one of the most popular companions to date. Now if only someone would start an Adric Home Page...

Newsgroup: rec.arts.drwho If all this isn't enough for you, join the discussion on this Usenet newsgroup. Also a good source for Doctor Who rumors.

Newsgroup: rec.arts.drwho.info A moderated newsgroup for the posting of information related to Doctor Who.

Newsgroup: alt.drwho.creative For discussions related to fan-written Doctor Who fiction.

Newsgroup: alt.binaries.drwho A relatively new newsgroup for the posting of Doctor Who multimedia files (.wav, .avi, .mpg, etc.).
